Recycling plant fire fills Columbia sky with smoke

CAYCE, S.C. (AP) — A fire at a recycling plant in Cayce has filled the sky in the Columbia area with smoke.

The fire was reported around 9 a.m. Friday at a plant filled with plastics.

One firefighter has been treated for heat exhaustion. No other injuries have been reported.

Cayce Public Safety Lt. Jeff Simmons says the fire apparently started on a wooden pallet in a building at Global Recycling. Simmons says the “wall-to-wall” plastics in the building are the source of the heavy black smoke.

Firefighters from West Columbia and Lexington were assisting.

Several employees in the building made it out safely.
