Man dies in sweltering trailer in Calhoun Falls
CALHOUN FALLS, S.C. (AP) — Authorities are waiting for autopsy results to determine if a 71-year-old man found dead in his Calhoun Falls trailer died from the heat.
Abbeville County Coroner Ronnie Ashley said Billy Johnson had no air conditioning in his home and was running only a small fan with the all the windows open when he was found dead around 2 p.m. Friday.
Ashley was in the trailer and said it was unbearably hot. But he says he wants to see results of an autopsy Sunday before ruling that temperatures that reached over 100 degrees Friday led to Johnson’s death.
Abbeville County officials have opened a cooling station in Abbeville and are accepting requests to check on the well-being of people who might live alone without air conditioning.
