Coroner says extreme heat factor in SC man’s death

CALHOUN FALLS, S.C. (AP) — A South Carolina coroner says the extreme heat was a contributing factor in the death of a 71-year-old man found in his Calhoun Falls trailer.

Abbeville County Coroner Ronnie Ashley said Sunday an autopsy found that Billy Johnson died of congestive heart failure worsened by the heat that overcame him. Ashley says Johnson’s home had no air conditioning and was cooled only by a small fan with the all the windows open.

Johnson was found dead Friday afternoon, when temperatures that topped 100 degrees.
