Steel from NYC Twin Towers becomes SC memorial

BOILING SPRINGS, S.C. (AP) — A South Carolina fire department is dedicating a memorial to the September 11 terrorist attacks on New York City featuring one of the steel beams that fell from the World Trade Center.

The Boiling Springs Fire Department chose July 4 to dedicate its long-awaited World Trade Center Memorial Plaza. It was 15 months ago that firefighters retrieved the 1,300-pound steel beam and brought it to the South Carolina Upstate.

A crowd of more than 100 gathered Wednesday as firefighters in dress uniform dedicated the memorial.

Captain Jeff Nelson says the fundraising effort took longer than expected, so last September’s planned unveiling on the tenth anniversary of the 2001 attacks had to be scrapped.
