Man shoots himself with Sumter officer’s gun

SUMTER, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say a Sumter man took a police officer’s gun during a struggle and used the weapon to shoot himself in the head.

Investigators said the officer was responding to a stabbing call around 10 p.m. Wednesday when 24-year-old Alfonso Jasper charged the officer and they began to fight.

Police say Jasper stabbed himself before the officer arrived and died at the scene of the shooting.

Family members say Jasper suffered from mental health problems.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting.
