Richland County deputy kills suspect after fight

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A Richland County sheriff’s deputy has shot and killed a suspect after fighting with the man he was trying to arrest.

Sheriff Leon Lott said the shooting happened after Deputy Reginald Grant went to a motel and thought he saw a domestic dispute around 4 a.m. Thursday.

Lott says Grant confronted the man, who ran away. The officer caught the man and they struggled. Lott says the suspect took Grant’s Taser twice. The sheriff says the deputy had to fire his gun after his Taser was taken a second time. .

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts says 30-year-old Keith Durham was shot in the upper body and died at a hospital.

Lott says Grant suffered knee and arm injuries. Lott says officers a bag of cocaine on Durham.
