Law officers rescue dolphin from Beaufort sand bar

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) — Several law officers are to thank for the safe return of a stranded dolphin to waters near Beaufort.

The Beaufort Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/MqkXu2) Fridrik Tiedemann and his grandson were kayaking July 3 on Battery Creek when they saw a dolphin stranded on a sandbar.

Tiedemann has worked with Beaufort police and the sheriff’s office. He says he was dragging the dolphin across the sandbar when Beaufort Fire Chief Clay Scoggins pulled up in a boat and offered a hand. The two men got the dolphin back into the creek, and it swam away.

It’s illegal to touch or feed dolphins, but the National Ocean Service says Tiedemann and Scoggins aren’t in trouble. Anyone who sees a stranded dolphin should call the Department of Natural Resources at 1-800-922-5431.
