No charges against former Beaufort principal

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) — The former principal at Beaufort High School will not face criminal charges for changing students’ grades.

The Beaufort Gazette reported (http://bit.ly/MHZH2W) that prosecutor Duffie Stone said he could not prove criminal intent on the part of Dan Durbin.

Durbin resigned in February after admitting he changed grades for 33 Beaufort High School students.

The Beaufort County School District had referred the case to Stone’s office. He had the State Law Enforcement Division investigate.

Stone said Durbin never denied changing the grades but he says there was no indication of criminal intent.

School district spokesman Jim Foster says the grades have been corrected.

Durbin has previously said he changed the grades to encourage the students to stay in school and graduate.
