Columbia, USC wrap up summer sports camps

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Columbia’s parks department is wrapping up a sports camp being held in conjunction with the University of South Carolina.

Officials from the parks and recreation department and the university are gathering Friday for a ceremony to round out the sixth annual camp.

Each Friday for the past eight weeks, a different group of children has participated in activities including track and field, soccer, basketball and cheerleading. The events are staffed by Gamecock coaches and athletes, and the kids get a chance to be exposed to new sports while on South Carolina’s main campus.

Officials say more than 300 children have been served through this year’s program.
