NC man jailed after homemade bombs found in car

SHELBY, N.C. (AP) — Officials in Cleveland County say a 43-year-old man is in jail after two homemade bombs were found in his car.

Authorities say Anthony Steven Carpenter led police on a two-state chase on Interstate 85. The discovery of explosives in his car forced officials to close northbound I-85 for several hours.

Deputies in Cherokee County, S.C., went to a campground to serve a warrant against Carpenter. They say Carpenter assaulted an officer, got into his car and drove off. Thursday’s pursuit ended when Carpenter’s car crashed near mile marker 5 in Cleveland County.

A bomb squad from Gaston County detonated the two devices.

Carpenter is jailed without bond on state fugitive charges and is wanted in South Carolina on several fraud-related charges. Jail records didn’t show whether Carpenter has an attorney.
