DHEC confirms 4 human cases of West Nile in SC

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Four people have contracted the West Nile virus in South Carolina.

State health officials on Monday confirmed three new cases in Richland, Lexington and Orangeburg counties. Last week, authorities said the first case, a woman in Charleston County, was detected after she gave blood.

The Department of Health and Environmental Control says the disease has also been detected in one dead crow, a horse and one mosquito pool.

DHEC says the mosquito-borne illness can have flu-like symptoms including fever, headache, joint pain, muscle pain and nausea and vomiting.
