Fire causes power, phone outages at Fort Jackson

FORT JACKSON, S.C. (AP) — A fire at an electrical substation has knocked out power and telephone service at Fort Jackson.

Army spokesman Pat Jones said Wednesday the Army’s largest training installation near Columbia is operating on a limited basis.

Jones says Moncrief Army Community Hospital on the post is operating on backup power and has a limited ability to handle acute medical and urgent care cases. Those with emergencies are advised to call 911 or seek help at an emergency facility outside of Fort Jackson.

Jones says crews from South Carolina Gas and Electric and Fort Jackson are working to restore power and determine the cause of the fire.

Jones advises that if anyone has an appointment at the hospital they should call to reschedule at 803-751-2273.
