Benedict Football Focuses On Special Teams

COLUMBIA, S.C. (BenedictTigers.com) — The Benedict Tigers held two practices on Thursday, spending a lot of time working on special teams, as well as working on defensive blitzes. “It went very, very well today. The guys were upbeat. We looked fast on both sides of the football. There were not a lot of turnovers,” said Benedict football coach James Woody. Woody said the team spent a lot of time putting in defensive blitzing packages, and having the offense pick up those blitzes. “We worked on hot reads offensively, building packages, knowing where to go with the football and knowing your route adjustments, and I thought they did a great job.” “We had a lackluster performance this morning, we gave them some time off, and they came out here this afternoon and they came back fresh and rejuvenated. The mistakes we made in the morning practice, we corrected them this afternoon,” Woody said. The Tigers also spent time working on special teams, and Woody praised the effort of the team’s two freshman kickers – punter Brian Curry and placekicker Emmanuel Hernandez. “The kickers are doing a great job. We got two great ones. Brian Curry, the punter, had a phenomenal day punting the ball day. We spent a lot of time on special teams, as far as punting the ball and ball placement, and they did a good job with it.” The Tigers have one practice scheduled for Friday at 4 p.m. The team will hold its first scrimmage Saturday at 7 p.m.
