Settlement reached in crash involving SC deputy
SUMTER, S.C. (AP) — A state judge has signed off on a settlement of a wrongful death lawsuit involving a man killed last year when a Richland County sheriff’s cruiser hit his sports utility vehicle.
The Item of Sumter reports (hhttp://bit.ly/Q7fLQYc) Judge Benjamin Culbertson approved the $300,000 settlement this week.
About $193,000 will go to the estate of Philip Hawkins of Sumter County. The 67-year-old homebuilder died in the crash in June of last year. The rest goes to attorney fees.
Authorities determined the deputy who ran a red light near Shaw Air Force Base likely had a seizure. He was not charged in the death.
