CDC Warning about Salmonella Link

COLUMBIA, S.C. (CNN) – They’re tiny and adorable, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns reptiles, like turtles, carry Salmonella. The CDC is working with health officials to investigate a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella infections in humans from turtles. More than 160 people have gotten sick in 30 states. 64% were under the age of 10. Officials are warning people to not buy small turtles from street vendors, websites or pet stores. They say the reptiles should not be kept as pets in homes with young children or people with weak immune systems. They warn people should always wash their hands after handling any reptile or anything in the area where they live.
