COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Freshman T.J. Gurley will fill in for the suspended D.J. Swearinger at safety this weekend when the no. 7 Gamecocks host SEC East foe Missouri Saturday. Swearinger was suspended this week for a hit on a defenseless UAB receiver last weekend in the Gamecocks 49-6 win over the Blazers. Yesterday, South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier told the media that Gurley can “play football.” The Head Ball Coach also mentioned that he hopes the scheme isn’t too difficult for Gurley to learn and that the team thinks “he’ll play well.” Gurley has already spent some time playing back-up to Swearinger. He’s registered six total tackles in game time during the Vanderbilt and East Carolina matchups.
