York County Honors Deputy Slain 20 Years Ago
York County sheriff’s deputies are wearing black bands around their badges to honor a fellow officer killed in the line of duty 20 years ago. Deputy Brent McCants was shot during a traffic stop in Rock Hill on Sept. 25, 1992. The sheriff’s office also lowered its flags to half-staff Tuesday. Two men were convicted in McCants’ death. Authorities say 46-year-old Mar-reece Hughes remains on death row. He asked to drop all his appeals and be executed, but he was ruled mentally incompetent to make that decision. A jury deadlocked over whether to sentence 43-year-old Dwayne Forney to death, so he is serving a life sentence.
