SC State faces do-or-die game in September

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina State coach Buddy Pough is letting his players know this Saturday’s game against Norfolk State is do-or-die for the Bulldogs season.

Pough says if the Bulldogs lose to the Spartans, their hopes for a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title and Football Championship Subdivision playoff bid are likely dead before the calendar turns to October.

South Carolina State is in this bind because it lost to Bethune-Cookman on Sept. 8.

Also on Saturday, The Citadel hopes to continue its best start since 1992 by beating Chattanooga. The Citadel last won the Southern Conference and went to the playoffs in 1992.

In other games involving South Carolina’s FCS teams Saturday, Wofford goes to Elon; Furman hosts Western Carolina; Coastal Carolina is at Appalachian State; and Presbyterian travels to Davidson.
