COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — As the number of South Carolinians enrolling in a free credit protection plan continues to grow in the midst of a statewide hacking incident, so does the concern of Governor Nikki Haley for three particular groups of people: the elderly and those with no computer access; those in the military; and those with minor dependents listed on their tax returns. State officials announced Friday that the South Carolina Department of Revenue’s computer servers had been hacked. Approximately 3.6 million social security numbers and 387,000 credit and debit card numbers have been exposed in an international cyber attack. The governor Monday addressed three groups of people she’s received concerned calls about: those who don’t have a computer… “If you don’t don’t have a computer, call the number. They will do it for you. You don’t have to worry about not having a computer.” …those in the military… “We are working with the Department of Defense to make sure the military is notified.” …and those with minor dependents listed on their tax returns. Once you’ve signed up for credit protection, you will get an email or letter within a few weeks where they match up minors on tax returns. the minors will also be covered.” This story continues to develop. A third press conference in three days has already been scheduled for Tuesday morning 9:15. For more details on how to protect yourself, go to www.protectmyid.com/scdor or call 1-866-578-5422.
