SC lottery: SLED probing accounting discrepancy

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — State police are investigating after the discovery of accounting problems at the South Carolina Education Lottery.

Lottery executive director Paula Harper Bethea said Wednesday that problems were revealed early last month during an internal investigation.

Bethea says the problems have been resolved and additional monitoring has been put in place to prevent further problems.

Bethea did not give details about how much money was missing or how the discrepancy was discovered. But she did say that lottery players, prize money and retailers that sell tickets were protected.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating. Spokesmen for the lottery and SLED didn’t immediately return messages.
