COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Fairfield Central has turned a step down from Class AAA to Class AA into a state championship game berth. In their first season in Class AA, the Griffins get a chance to earn their first football state championship since winning back-to-back AAA titles in 1996 and 1997. Fairfield Central will have to knock off perennial power Dillon at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Benedict College. Dillon last played for a title in 2010 and won back-to-back AA championships in 2008 and 2009. 2nd-year Fairfield Central coach Demetrius Davis hopes this year’s title run will be the first of many championship games to come. “We’re playing a bunch of young guys,” Davis said earlier this week. “At the beginning of the year on offense we only had two guys with varsity experience.” “I don’t think we have all the great players like a lot of other teams that are going to be playing this weekend, but I think we have a pretty good football team. Our chemistry’s great, and we’re like one big family.”
