Holtz: “There’s a sense of pride here that wasn’t here in 1999.”
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — “I don’t even remember who spoke at my commencement, let alone what he said. I hope many of you don’t have that same experience,” says Lou Holtz, former Gamecock Head Football Coach. Monday, Coach Holtz gave words of wisdom to USC graduates. “I’ve been 20, you’ve never been 75,” says Holtz. Moments before he addressed the crowd Holtz was awarded a doctorate of education from the University on a day “Dr. Lou,” says has many reasons. “It’s a day of Thanksgiving, it’s a day of celebration, it’s a day of remembrance,” says Holtz. Holtz took a trip down memory lane before addressing the grads in a press conference where he said things have changed a lot since his last six years here. “There’s a sense of pride in the University that I did not see in 1999 when I came here,” says Holtz. That pride was in the faces of graduates Monday afternoon. “It’s just a lot of hard work up to this point and it’s really good to see it come to a head,” says Keegan Miller, USC graduate “It’s just time to get it done with and start focusing and growing up,” says Sarah Metallo, USC graduate. Crandall Sims reporting, “Despite the feelings of joy and relief that the stress of college is over, these graduates are about to experience a new stress, it’s called the job market. Because just as their peers have before them, these graduates will enter a job market that is still in a slow recovery.” “Well as I was talking with the other graduates. We’re going to have to go to grad school,” says Metallo. “Right now, I’ve applied to law school.” says Miller. And even though the break from the books may not be long for many here. “Dr. Lou” says they need just four things to be successful. “Everybody needs something to do, everybody needs someone to love, everybody needs someone to believe in and everybody needs something to hope for,” says Holtz.
