SC high school lab evacuated after grenade found
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A Lexington County high school was evacuated after a training grenade was found inside a science laboratory.
WIS-TV reports (http://bit.ly/UQh9FT ) that students and employees at Pelion High School were told to leave the building Friday afternoon after a teacher found the hand grenade.
The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department went to the school and removed the grenade from the property.
A spokesperson with the sheriff’s department said it appears the grenade, which was inside a military box, had been in the laboratory for some time. School officials said deputies determined that the device was a training grenade.
Emergency responders said there was never any danger to students or staff.
Deputies and school administrators are investigating why the grenade was in the laboratory.
