SC officials say no drop in electronic filing
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The state revenue department says there’s been no significant drop in electronic tax returns, despite last year’s hacking of the South Carolina system.
The State newspaper reported (http://bit.ly/XXfOVt ) the revenue department reports than 83 percent of the returns it has processed this year have been filed electronically.
Agency spokeswoman Samatha Cheek says typically about 80 to 85 percent of taxpayers’ returns are filed electronically.
Hackers stole information from nearly 4 million individual and 700,000 business tax returns last year.
No information was taken from paper returns and officials had wondered if taxpayers would file more paper returns this year.
The agency had been prepared to hire more workers to process paper returns if necessary.
