York County finds possible buyer for baseball park

FORT MILL, S.C. (AP) — A Charlotte-based clothing retail company is interested in buying the land beneath the South Carolina minor-league baseball stadium where the Charlotte Knights have played for decades. The Herald of Rock Hill reported Saturday (http://bit.ly/Zy2Xs0 ) Cato Corp. wants to buy the 32-acre site and the York County Council will consider its proposal Monday. Some of the land will be used for a Cato distribution center expected to create 130 jobs. The county and Cato have discussed developing the remaining land into mixed-use project that mixes office space, retail shops, apartments and a hotel. The Knights have played for 24 years at the in Fort Mill stadium built by former team owner George Shinn. The Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox moves to a new downtown Charlotte stadium next year.
