Haley announces SC book drive for rural children

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A nonprofit started by Gov. Nikki Haley is asking residents to donate books for children in rural counties it serves.

The Original Six Foundation is organizing a statewide book drive from Aug. 5 through Aug. 17.

Haley was on hand Monday at a news conference at the Richland County Library in Eastover announcing the details. Haley and her nonprofit’s board of directors are asking people to donate new or gently used children’s and South Carolina history books. Collection boxes will be placed in all 67 state Department of Motor Vehicles offices across the state.

The books will be donated to libraries, schools, and after-school programs in seven rural counties. They are Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Clarendon, Marion, Marlboro and Union counties.
