COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — It’s a parent’s worst nightmare. Your child gets hits by a car, is critically injured, and the driver keeps going. More than that, nearly a year later, no one has come forward with answers. “They hit her like she was just an object and never slowed down, hit the brakes, never looked back,” says Susan Bires, of her daughter, Lindsay’s, brain trauma and other injuries after being the victim of a hit and run. Now, ten and a half months later, Susan Bires says Lindsay has “been in hell.” The 25-year-old was struck by a car while on break as a nurse at Palmetto Health Richland September 16th., at 2:30am, according to authorities. Bires says her daughter still struggles. “She had a total of 13 orthapedic surgeries, not including the bolt (in her head), tracheotomy, feeding tube, external rods to hold her legs in place and other things she had to endure.” Speaking for Lindsay, Susan reached out to ABC Columbia News to beg for answers to the questions that still remain. “How do you do tsomething like that and continue with life and act like you did nothing wrong?” Columbia’s interim police chief Ruben Santiago describes the vehicle in question as a compact, white car. But, he knows there’s much more to this case. “When you look at the evidence, it happened September 16th at 2:30 in the morning. It could’ve been a drunk driver, someone not paying attention. If the individual responsible doesn’t come forward, someone who knows the person…we need that information.” While police look to the community for answers, Lindsay wants answers from the driver of that car. “Lindsay wants me to let the person know who did this, she feels it’s been way too long, she’s been suffering way too long and she deserves some damn justice.” Susan Bires says a $15,000 reward is being offered to anyone with information leading to an arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible.
