Carolina Calls Recap: Kentucky Week

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — South Carolina head football coach Steve Spurrier spoke about the Gamecocks’ Saturday showdown with Kentucky on Thursday during his weekly call-in radio show at the Wild Wing Cafe in Columbia.

Notes:

-Spurrier said the Gamecocks just have to get ready to play and for the most part, worry about themselves. He wants the team to finish games and try to have a good 4th quarter. “We haven’t had a good 4th quarter all year,” said Spurrier.

-Spurrier said he is trying to be more positive about how the team is performing because he knows South Carolina is the youngest team in Division I football.

-Spurrier said quarterback Connor Shaw has gotten yelled at recently because he has fumbled the ball twice this year. “He’s got to take better care of the ball, he’s got to be more aware,” said Spurrier.

-He updated the status of defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, who sat out of practice Thursday night. “Jadeveon is fine, he’s dealing with a few injuries so we figured we’d let him sit one out tonight,” said Spurrier.

-Spurrier praised the fans for their support this season and selling-out the games. He said he hopes the student section will stay full the entire game.

-He said he was hot in Orlando last Saturday and he think the conditioning really helped the Gamecocks. Spurrier said he and the rest of the coaching staff sweated the entire game. “We’ve had some hot ones so far. We hope this Saturday night it will be a little less hot and will be a beautiful night to play,” said Spurrier.

-“The rumor out of Kentucky is that they only had one quarterback take all the snaps in practice this week. I’m not sure why they are trying to be so secretive and not tell who it is, but we have two quarterbacks too, and we’re not telling them who’ll get the most playing time on Saturday,” said Spurrier.

-Spurrier said he has learned something from every game he’s coached.

-He said the team will take a knee when they have a lead and some time on the clock.
