Local Animal Shelter Could Close

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — It’s a place that has saved the lives of many of Columbia’s four-legged residents.

“Broken bones, we get them in shot, bitten by snakes,” says Jane Brundage, owner of PETSinc.

From rescues even owner surrenders, PETSinc. takes in new pets, daily. Just Monday, ‘Applejacks’ came in.

“He’s suffering from malnutrition and poor breeding,” says Brundage.

Over the years, PETSin has touted success stories like ‘Cowboy,’ a pit bull who was used as a bait dog in dog fighting a couple years ago. After being rehabilitated at PETSinc, he was adopted and now lives a normal life.

But, the care for dogs like him and ‘Applejacks’ is part of the reason PETSinc has such a difficult choice to make.

“We’re in this alone, we need more support. We need some additional financial support,”says Brundage.

In just sixty days, they will choose whether to stay open or close. For Brundage, this place is her heart.

Even with the sales from the pet store, Brundage tells me abandonments have been on the rise and the cost of rehabilitating those animals outweighs the money coming in.

“They say prosecute these people. But, you know, the only reason they are bringing these animals to us is because they care. How do you prosecute people like that? I’m not gonna do it,” says Brundage

Jane says no matter what happens even if the doors close, she will not euthanize the pets. But, she needs your help to keep things going.

“They say we have a lot of friends in the community, if you’re one of our friends, join us, join us now… we need it now,”say Brundage.

Brundage says they do have faithful givers, like one woman who gives $2.00 each month. It’s all she can give, but she sends cash every month. Jane says it is donations like that they depend on and those that make them smile.
