(WOLO) COLUMBIA,S.C.,–

Dozens of South Carolina families and friends who’ve lost loved ones to acts of violence gathered at the state house to hold a silent march in their honor.

The event held by the organization Parents of Murdered Children, allowed members who attended to take turns speaking at the podium about what happened to them and their family and how it’s impacted their lives.

Many of them held pictures of their children, as they marched from Main Street to Washington street.

One local family spoke out about the loss of their son, 21 year old Preston Antoine Brown, a former soldier with the Army who served his country in Iraq but was shot and killed while in El Paso, Texas by a stray bullet.

His mother, Columbia resident Stephanie Wheatstone says the last year of her life has been the hardest thing she has ever gone through, but found comfort in knowing their were other families she could talk to who’ve been through the same thing.

The event held here at home was similar to other demonstrations held throughout the country in honor of National Day of Remembrance.
