Benedict Kicks Off Spring Football

COLUMBIA, S.C. (BC SID) — The Benedict College Tigers football team opened spring practice on Wednesday with excitement and enthusiasm, despite an early 5 a.m. practice. “I was surprised with the excitement and energy,” said Benedict football coach James Woody. “It was a good fundamental practice.” About 90 players participated in the practice. Woody said it was obvious that many of the players got stronger and faster from offseason workouts. “Coach (Alonzo) Shuler is doing a great job with our strength program. You can see the difference in their strength,” Woody said. Woody said the team is focusing on finding a starting quarterback. Brandon Thompson, who played in five games, is being challenged by redshirt freshman Jeremy Hinds. “Jeremy Hinds is picking things up very well. I was impressed with his leadership. Brandon Thompson came out with a lot of energy, but his timing just wasn’t there. I expect one of these quarterbacks to step up and take charge.” Another redshirt freshman who had a strong first practice was wide receiver Demetrius Pinkett, according to Woody. “He’s going to be one of our top wide receivers,” Woody said. “The defense did some good things,” Woody said. “These guys understand their formations. The linebackers looked quicker and faster.” Coach Antwan Nicholas is taking over as defensive coordinator. Chris Thomas, a former Benedict quarterback and graduate assistant last season, was elevated to running backs coach. The newest member of the coaching staff, Kareem Jackson, will coach the defensive backs. Woody also said punter Brian Curry showed improvement, as well. “He kicked the ball extremely well. He was very consistent. His leg has gotten stronger.” The Tigers will continue with a 5 a.m. practice on Thursday. The team will practice at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The spring game will be April 12.
