USC Women’s Golf Opens NCAA Championship 11th

TULSA, OK (USC SID) — The South Carolina women‘s golf team shot a 301 (+21) on Tuesday in the opening round of the NCAA Championship at Tulsa Country Club in Tulsa, Okla. and is currently in 11th place. “They [the team] battled all day,” said head coach Kalen Harris. “It was a really tough day with the wind. We got some good breaks and some bad breaks, but overall they battled. We played some solid golf but we struggled coming in a little bit, which was a tough. Overall we‘re within range, not exactly where we want to be but with three days left and a lot of golf to play, anything can happen.” Oklahoma finished the round in first place with a score of 288 (+8). UCLA is currently in second place with a score of 291 (+11). Senior Samantha Swinehart carded the low round of the day for the Gamecocks, turning in a 3-over 73. She tallied three birdies on the day and finished the round in a tie for 22nd place. Freshman Katelyn Dambaugh and senior Suzie Lee both concluded the round in a tie for 41st place with a score of 75 (+5). Sophomore Sarah Schmelzel finished next on the leaderboard for the Garnet and Black in a tie for 79th place with a score of 78 (+8). Junior Justine Dreher shot a first-round 80 (+10) and is currently tied for 102nd place. “Hopefully tomorrow we‘ll be able to get out in the morning when it‘s a little less windy and get the opportunity to have better scoring conditions. They [the team] have been coming back all year so this group is definitely capable of doing some special things. South Carolina is scheduled to tee off at 8:25 a.m. ET on Wednesday in the second round and will be paired with Alabama and Washington. Live scoring is available through Golfstat.
