SUMTER, S.C. (WOLO) — George Singletary is behind bars charged with murder, attempted murder and aggravated assault. Authorities say he shot two people and injured another. While they do not have a motive, Singletary’s reported religion came up during a press conference Wednesday morning. “Speaking with him briefly he may be affiliated, we believe, he is identifying himself as a Muslim or the sovereign type citizens that we have,” says Sheriff Anthony Dennis, Sumter County Dennis says they don’t know how much of a role that claim may have played in Wednesday’s shooting but they are looking into it. “We identify him as George Singletary, he calls himself Salam.” Around 5:15 a.m. Wednesday, Dennis says, a woman woke up inside a Pearson Road home to loud music and an altercation between her son and Singletary. “He had blood on his clothing. At that point she ran to him and that’s when the laceration to her ear occurred,” says Dennis Dennis says the male victim had been shot in the head, moments later the scene turned more violent. “Singletary ran into a room and by the time they were able to enter the room, that’s when they found Joshua Brown. He was laying in the bed, he had also been shot in the head,” says Dennis Brown later died. A manhunt ensued for Singletary. He was arrested several hours later.
