(WOLO) COLUMBIA,S.C, — If you’re behind the wheel and you’re initial reaction when a text message arrives is to grab it – you may need to slow down. South Carolina is one of the last states – 49th in fact to pass a law to keep drivers’ eye’s focused on the road and off of their phones. Most people we spoke with say they’re glad the state is answering the call to address the deadly dangers of texting and driving. The new bill signed into law by the governor this week will now make it illegal to use a wireless device to write, send, or read a text or email while your car is in motion. Police will have to have a clear and unobstructed view of the phone in use before a fine up to 25 dollars can be issued. the infraction won’t go on your driving record…a move some say Just isn’t tough enough. Including USC Senior Jordan Hicks who admits to texting while driving in the past. For Hicks, the new measure will make her think twice before reaching for the phone but she doesn’t think the threat of such a small penalty will be enough for everyone. ” i don’t think it’s stiff enough . it’s the same as buckling a seat belt and nobody really cares about that rule. just a 25 dollar fine doesn’t affect me. if i get pulled once, i don’t care.” Still other drivers say anything is better than nothing. The law is currently in effect, but police will only issue warnings for the next 180 days.
