COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — South Congaree residents packed their Town Hall Monday morning for a special called meeting regarding the employment of Police Chief Josh Shumpert. ABC Columbia News was there, we’re told during Executive Session Shumpert was notified he could either resign or be terminated. Shumpert reportedly refused to resign and his badge and weapon were taken. “I’ve never seen anything quite like this,” says Jake Moore, Attorney for Chief Josh Shumpert Moore has only been representing Shumpert for about a day. Shumpert hired him Sunday when he got the call about Monday’s special called meeting. “The chief doesn’t know and never has known what he allegedly did wrong,” says Moore. Moments after Shumpert’s badge and weapon were taken, Moore argued that such a decision could not be made and a meeting, with the issue listed on the agenda, would have to be held. “Whatever they voted to do in executive session, they apparently voted to undo it. So, he has his badge and his gun back and he is now chief,” says Moore. Outside council chambers, a sign that reads, “Keep Josh fire council,” it appears to be from “the citizens.” “By the appearance of the crowd council, I believe, truly needs to take into consideration the town’s people and who we represent,” says Brian Jackson, South Congaree Mayor. While the reason behind Monday’s drama wasn’t given, we are told it had nothing to do with the scandal involving previous chief, Jason Amodio. Amodio was indicted last month on Misconduct in Office charges. “Things appeared to be going in a positive direction, but like anything challenges arise,” says Jackson. “All we ask, the chief asks, is for there to be peace and to please tell him what it is they don’t like about his job performance,” says Moore. Town Council will meet tomorrow to discuss this issue. The public is invited and will be allowed to make comments. The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m in council chambers.
