Nightclub owner accused of killing patron

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) — A retired New York corrections officer is accused of killing a man at the Orangeburg nightclub he owned.

The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reports (http://bit.ly/1uvFMjn ) 69-year-old James Williams was charged Saturday with murder in the July 19 death of 26-year-old Phillip Brunson at the Corner Pocket Club.

According to an incident report, Williams told deputies Brunson tried to enter his club with a pistol, and when Brunson shot at a glass door, Williams returned fire.

A woman told investigators she and Brunson were kicked out after a fight. Another witness said Brunson returned with a gun, and Williams gained control of the weapon during a struggle and shot Brunson.

Williams told the judge he’s a retired New York corrections captain who has lived in Orangeburg for 20 years.
