Closed hazardous waste landfill to get new manager

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A closed hazardous waste landfill near Lake Marion will soon have a new manager.

The state Department of Health and Environmental Control and Kestrel Horizons issued a joint statement Monday about the company’s resignation as the site’s trustee.

The two actually signed a transition agreement Friday, the day the agency asked Kestrel to resign.

According to the agreement, the agency paid Kestrel $450,000 on Monday as the final payment for its administrative services. The resignation is effective Oct. 31. The agency will identify an interim administrator during the three-month transition.

Agency director Catherine Templeton says Kestrel has done a good job overseeing the 279-acre site, but its administrative fees are too high.

The Greenville company was appointed the site’s trustee after industrial waste hauler Safety-Kleen filed for bankruptcy in 2000.
