Charleston sheriff’s deputy killed in shooting

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) – One Charleston County sheriff’s deputy has been killed and another injured when they were shot through the door of an apartment. The sheriff’s office said a standoff at the Gardens of Ashley River apartment complex followed the shooting and ended around 4 a.m. Tuesday. Deputies did not release any information on the status of the suspect to local reporters. A news conference was planned later Tuesday. Sheriff Al Cannon said one deputy died at the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital and another officer was in serious condition. Their names have not been released. Investigators say two off-duty deputies working as security officers and three on-duty officers responded to a report of a person creating a disturbance around 7:30 p.m. Monday. The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating.
