Sheheen calls for federal investigation into DSS
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Gov. Nikki Haley’s Democratic opponent is calling for a federal investigation into South Carolina’s Department of Social Services.
Sen. Vincent Sheheen said Tuesday the U.S. attorney in South Carolina should look into allegations he’s heard from potential whistleblowers that the Cabinet agency has misused federal money.
He offered no evidence, saying that’s the job of federal law enforcement. Sheheen said he had not yet contacted U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles but planned to send him a letter.
Sheheen issued the request during his speech before the Silver Haired Legislature, which meets each fall to make recommendations on senior issues.
Neither Nettles’ office nor Haley’s office offered comment.
DSS has become a central issue in the governor’s race. Haley’s appointee to the agency resigned in June.
