SC Club for Growth backs Democrat for 1st time

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The South Carolina Club for Growth has endorsed the Democrat seeking to unseat Secretary of State Mark Hammond.

It’s the first time since the group’s founding a decade ago that the network of fiscal conservatives has endorsed a Democrat for statewide office. Ginny Deerin says she’s running to make the office more efficient, to include putting more bureaucratic functions online.

The group also applauds Deerin’s stance that the administrative job should be an appointed position. Hammond is seeking a fourth term.

The secretary of state’s responsibilities include filing documents for businesses, regulating charitable organizations and acting as the state’s cable franchise authority.

Deerin is the co-founder of a nonprofit organization that aims to help more women get elected in South Carolina. She also founded the after-school nonprofit Wings for Kids.
