Watson Earns ACC Weekly Honors

CLEMSON, S.C. (CU SID) — Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson has been named the ACC Rookie of the Week. This past Saturday evening Watson came off the bench and completed 19-28 passes for 266 yards in a 23-17 overtime loss at number-one ranked Florida State. Watson also rushed 12 times for 30 yards and scored a touchdown. His 296 yards of total offense were a record for a Clemson true freshman quarterback and his 266 passing yards were the second most. Watson is the first Clemson quarterback to win ACC Rookie of the Week honors since Kyle Parker in 2009 for his performance in an overtime win against an eighth ranked Miami (FL) team. Parker is now a member of the Colorado Rockies. Other Clemson quarterbacks who have won ACC Rookie of the Week honors over the years are Rodney Williams (1985 vs. Virginia), Patrick Sapp (1992 vs. North Carolina), Dexter McCleon (1993 vs. Virginia), Nealon Greene (1994 vs. Georgia), Willie Simmons (2000 vs. North Carolina), Charlie Whitehurst (2002 vs. North Carolina) and Kyle Parker (2009 vs. Georgia Tech and Miami (FL). Watson has been named Clemson‘s starting quarterback for Saturday‘s upcoming game against North Carolina.
