Man re-sentenced to 1 yr. for his role in deputy shooting
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — After Kevin Reed, convicted for his role in the shooting of Richland County Deputy Miles Weaver got a new, negotiated sentence of just one year for the crime; Weaver says he feels like a victim of the system. His reaction comes after he and his wife made emotional pleas, in court Thursday, for a different outcome. The purpose of the hearing was to re-sentence Reed. In June of 2002, Reed and another suspect, Aaron Harris, were stopped by Deputy Weaver on Fairmont Dr. near Leesburg Rd. Reed and Harris were accused in a string of ATM robberies in the area. They later told authorities they thought Weaver was pulling them over because of those robberies. But, it was a traffic stop. “They were willing to kill to stay out of jail,” said Weaver in court Thursday. When Weaver approached the car, he says, Harris fired a weapon. “I didn’t see the flash, I didn’t hear the gun,” says Weaver Harris later admitted to his role and is serving a 27 year sentence. Reed was sentenced to 17 years for the robberies and 10 years for his role in Weaver’s shooting. But a mishap in lost paperwork, rejecting appeals, and a reportedly destroyed trial transcript, according to the Solicitor’s Office, would make it nearly impossible to recreate the trial. Even with a new trial, came the chance that Reed would walk free. So came a negotiated deal of one year for Reed’s role in the shooting of Weaver to be served consecutive to his armed robbery sentence.
