COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — This week, parents at CrossRoads and Irmo Middle Schools received a phone blast letting them know a child, at CrossRoads Middle, was recently admitted to the hospital with Enterovirus. The notification went on to say it has not been confirmed if the child has the EV-68 strand. Already, the Centers for Disease Control has confirmed 600 cases of that strand in 43 states including South Carolina. A case was confirmed in the Upstate last month. There are things parents and students can do to stay healthy from Enterovirus: Wash hands often with soap and warm water for 20 seconds. Avoid touching the eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands. Avoid kissing, hugging and sharing cups or eating utensils with people who are sick. Lexington-Richland 5 District officials told parents, in the phone blast, “While there is no indication our student has EV-68, out of an abundance of caution, we felt it was important to let you know of this occurrence. The district leadership and our health care professionals will continue to monitor this situation closely and take all necessary steps to keep our students safe.”
