(WOLO) COLUMBIA,S.C., — ” it’s something we can’t let up on , not even a little given the type of threat we face.” He’s only been in office for 13 months, but National FBI Director James Comey says when it comes to keeping you safe his organization isn’t not playing any games. From cyber – security to counter terrorism on American soil and beyond, Director Comey says the threat is very real. And not only is it growing, but it’s changed in the past 10 years making it more difficult to identify. “The so called traveler threat where people are going into conflict zones, especially syria and iraq. it’s worrisome they are going there. their coming back is even more worrisome.” Comey says there are dozens of Americans joining the fight with groups such as ISIL. while he would not say if they’re zoning in on any people here in South Carolina, he did say all of his field offices are focused on this issue. Including the hunt for the latest suspect seen in a newly surfaced execution video. Counter-terrorism is the FBI’s top priority but it’s far from the only concern. Cyber crime and those booting up to take advantage of a internet connected world is also something Comey says officials have their eyes on as the problem continues to grow. ” It’s more and more our entire world. it’s where everything is. all of our lives. social, health, business, government, infrastructure. it’s all there.” The good news is so is the FBI, but they’re still admittedly a few steps behind the bad guys. ” We are getting better but there is a lot further to go. the private sector is working harder to improve it’s defenses and encourages consumers to use the same caution walking around the internet they would use walking around a strange neighborhood. changes are you’re more likely to get ripped off walking around the internet.”
