COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Testimony continued Thursday in the trial for the two men accused of killing Midlands mother, Kelly Hunnewell in July 2013. Latoya Barnes, mother of two of the suspects Trenton Barnes and Troy Stevenson, took the stand. She testified that Lorenzo Young, Trenton Barnes and Troy Stevenson were all at her home around 11:00 p.m. – midnight, just hours before the prosecution says Hunnewell was killed. Barnes also testified that Trenton Barnes was wearing a grey hoodie, Lorenzo Young was wearing a red hoodie and Troy Stevenson was wearing a dark shirt. In surveillance video from inside the bakery, one suspect is seen wearing a red hoodie and another is seen wearing a grey hoodie. Donald Moore also took the stand. The prosecution says he tipped off a Columbia Police Officer saying he had information about the shooting. Moore claims that information, including identifying Young and Stevenson on the surveillance video, was all false. “I told them I lied about all of that, wasn’t none of that confession true,” said Moore. We also heard from Young’s girlfriend, and mother of his two children, Rolanda Coleman. Coleman testified that Young came home the morning of the shooting with a gun, he wrapped it in a cloth and hid it in the bassinet where his daughter sleeps. Coleman testified that the child wasn’t there, instead she was at her grandmother’s house. Also on Thursday, the jury was shown surveillance video from inside the bakery showing the very moment that Hunnewell was killed. Hunnewell’s mother and brother were present in the courtroom. Wednesday opening statements were heard. “I just heard a woman scream, ‘No, no, no’ and then bam, bam, bam, bam, bam,” said Theresa Baskin Baskin was the second person to take the stand in the murder trial against Lorenzo Young and Trenton Barnes, both are accused of killing 33 year old Kelly Hunnewell in 2013. Baskin lives across the street from the bakery where Hunnewell was killed. “It was terrifying. I mean, I can’t describe the terror in her voice,” said Baskin Hunnewell was working at the bakery, off Tommy Circle near Beltline Boulevard, when she was gunned down on the morning of July 1, 2013. Prosecuting Attorney, Dolly Garfield talked about the actions, that the prosecutions claimed to be, of Young and Barnes, on the night of the killing, during opening statements. “Guns were drawn, placed to her head area and a brief struggle ensues. Kelly cannot get away. They begin to fire at her multiple times and one bullet enters her chest area and lodges into her back,” said Garfield. Garfield says the suspects then left Hunnewell to die in a pool of blood. Trenton Barnes’ attorney Mark Schnee alleged, during opening statements, that an investigator threatened the life of a suspect and hid evidence. The prosecution objected and requested a mistrial. The judge held a meeting with both the prosecution and defense in chambers. The prosecution later withdrew their request for a mistrial based on the discussion in chambers. The trial resumed. Testimony will continue tomorrow.
