Elzey at SC State taking pay cut

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina State University President Thomas Elzey says that amid the school’s financial troubles he will be taking a cut in pay.

The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reports (http://bit.ly/14QCMmP ) the school faces a possible $2.2 million shortfall in tuition and fees by the spring semester.

Elzey has urged school workers to take voluntary furlough days and says he will be doing the same. State lawmakers must approve the furloughs.

A school spokeswoman says while Elzey will continue working, he will take a pay cut corresponding to furlough days.

The school has been working to improve its financial situation.

The Budget and Control Board this year approved a $6 million loan while a committee of current and former state college presidents has determined the university has an $18 million deficit.
