Woman charged with fleeing with child seeks bond
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A woman arrested in Australia on charges of abducting her infant daughter from South Carolina 20 years ago wants to be free on bond. Federal prosecutors oppose the idea. They say there’s a risk Dorothy Lee Barnett will flee again.
The 54-year-old Barnett, formerly of the Isle of Palms, faces up to 30 years in prison on a charge of parental kidnapping and two counts of falsifying U.S. passport applications. She is scheduled to have a bond hearing before a federal magistrate in Charleston on Monday.
Barnett’s attorney argues in court documents she is not a risk to flee, but the prosecution argues she has spent 20 years using false identifications and fleeing a family court order.
