COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — This time of year, cash registers are ringing and shoppers are shelling out big bucks for their family members. But, before you head out to shop for your loved ones, there are a few things to keep in mind. Let’s start with cash vs. credit. Spokesperson for the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs, Juliana Harris says credit cards may be better than debit cards. Here’s why: “It’s one of those things that, um, if their number was ever compromised it’s a little bit easier to dispute credit card fraud than, you know, debit,” says Harris Another thing to consider, the time that could pass before you find a fraudulent charge. “Your debit card, it’s connected directly to your bank account. So, if that got compromised the criminal could potentially wipe you out before you even realized anything bad has happened,” says Harris. But, when it comes to budgeting purposes Harris says cash is better for staying on track. Besides money, deputies warn of your physical safety. Some of the tips to stay safe include: Be aware of your surroundings and scan the area from time to time. Be alert in crowded places, favorite places for pickpockets are revolving doors, jammed aisles and elevators to name a few. Carry the most expensive items close to your body and carry minimal amounts of cash.
