Calhoun County tire dump remains after 3 years
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — After more than three years, a large illegal tire dump still hasn’t been cleaned up in Calhoun County.
Thousands and thousands of tires remain at the site in a patch of thick woods near Eloree. Officials estimate there were 250,000 tires there when the dump was discovered in 2011.
Three Rivers Solid Waste Authority has been hired to clean up the mess. Company General Manager Tim Fox told The State of Columbia (http://bit.ly/1CvfbXM ) that on one side of the site are wetlands that make it hard to get heavy equipment in and the other side has private landowners who have to give permission to have trucks pass through their land.
The authority says it hopes to get all the tires removed by June.
