Man gets life for baseball bat killing of his mom

SUMTER, S.C. (AP) — A man will spend the rest of his life in prison after he was convicted of killing his 85-year-old mother with a baseball bat.

The Sumter Item reports (http://bit.ly/1yxWizu ) a Sumter County jury found 63-year-old Alexander “Bobby” Wilson guilty but mentally ill Wednesday after his murder trial in the November 2010 slaying.

Circuit Judge W. Jeffrey Young says the killing was among the most gruesome things he has ever seen, and even with Wilson’s mental problems, he couldn’t risk him ever being free.

A guilty but mentally ill verdict means Wilson will get special mental health treatment behind bars. Otherwise he’ll be treated like a regular prisoner.

Wilson testified in his own defense, saying he killed his mother because she was a clone and refused to give him money.
